Suddenly, artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere. The smart technology brings a range of benefits to our lives, from streamlining everyday tasks to making scientific breakthroughs. The advantages of AI and machine learning (ML) also include automating repetitive tasks, analyzing vast amounts of data, and minimizing human error. But how do these benefits apply to the physical security industry, and is there a downside? We asked this week’s Expert Panel Roundtable: What are the benefits, and drawbacks, of using artificial intelligence (AI) in physical security?

A benefit of using artificial intelligence in physical security is automation of certain tasks. This includes counting occupancy in a room or identifying if a camera’s view has been tilted or blocked by some obstruction such as leaves or a room re-arrangement. A drawback is the potential for over-reliance on the software. Artificial intelligence results should be reviewed by a person before a final decision to act is made.
